Small leaves, big personality. The Begonia 'Julau' plant is a rare Bornean begonia with dark, textured leaves dusted in silvery speckles, the kind of plant that rewards a closer look every time you open the terrarium. Depending on light it will also exhibit gorgeous pink tones.
Botanically it's Begonia sp. 'Julau', an undescribed species named for the Julau district of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where begonias grow low on shaded, humid forest floors. That origin explains its wishlist: steady moisture, gentle light, and air that never dries out. It stays compact and creeps slowly, which makes it a natural fit for terrariums and vivariums. Give it a sealed or semi-sealed home and it settles in to grow its own little living world.
Care snapshot
- Light: Low to medium indirect light, or a gentle grow light. Harsh sun will scorch those leaves.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. A light, airy mix with good drainage keeps the roots happy.
- Difficulty: Intermediate. Easygoing once it's in a humid terrarium; fussier out on an open shelf.
- Pet-safety: Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, especially the roots and stems. Best kept out of reach (a closed terrarium helps).
