Some plants earn their names. Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) grows a whorl of glossy, strap-like fronds that spiral outward from a central cup — a shape that really does look like a nest, with new growth curled tight at the centre, just waiting to unfurl.
Native to tropical rainforest floors and tree trunks across Southeast Asia, East Africa, and Australia, this fern evolved in dappled light and warm, humid air. That background translates surprisingly well indoors. Unlike the delicate, lacy ferns that give up the moment humidity drops, Bird's Nest Fern has broad, forgiving fronds that handle the natural ups and downs of a regular home with a lot more grace.
Care snapshot
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun — it scorches the fronds.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, but water around the outer edge of the pot rather than into the central crown — pooling water in the nest can cause rot.
- Difficulty: Beginner — one of the more forgiving ferns you can grow indoors.
- Pet-safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
What you'll receive
Plants are living things, so the Bird's Nest Fern you receive will have its own character — frond count, size, and shape may vary slightly from the photo. That's part of what makes each one its own.
Lush, architectural, and quietly low-key — Bird's Nest Fern is a great first fern and a genuinely handsome addition to any collection. Give one a home and watch it open up.
