Some plants ask for attention. The Black Pagoda Lipstick just takes it. Every glossy, lance-shaped leaf is marbled with dark maroon veining over olive green — and flip one over and the underside is a deep burgundy, like the foliage was dipped in wine. It's Aeschynanthus longicaulis, a trailing tropical that turns a shelf or hanging pot into a quiet showstopper.

Native to the warm forests of Southeast Asia, it grows as an epiphyte — clinging to trees rather than soil — which is why it trails so beautifully indoors. Give it time and bright light and you may be rewarded with its namesake bloom: a dark, speckled calyx that opens to a bright orange-red tubular flower, the little "lipstick" the family is named for. Foliage first, flowers as a bonus.

Care snapshot

  • Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the maroon patterning rich and encourages blooms. Avoid harsh midday sun.
  • Water: When the top inch or two of mix dries out. Those thick leaves hold water, so it forgives the occasional forgotten watering more than most. Plant it in a well-draining tropical mix.
  • Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate — easygoing, with a little extra love for humidity.
  • Pet-safety: Pet-safe — lipstick plants (Aeschynanthus) are non-toxic to cats and dogs per the ASPCA. As with any plant, a curious nibbler may still get a mild tummy ache, so it's a low-worry pick rather than a free-for-all.

What you'll receive

One established Black Pagoda Lipstick plant, trailing and ready to settle in. Plants are living things, so yours will have its own character — leaf count, length, and patterning will vary slightly from the photo, which is part of the charm.

Textured, trailing, and unlike anything else on the shelf — the Black Pagoda earns its spot for the foliage alone, then surprises you with flowers when it's happy. Give one a home and watch it thrive.
