Meet the flame violet that traded fire for smoke. Episcia cupreata 'Pink Smoke' wears fuzzy, quilted leaves brushed in silvery rose over deep green veining — less campfire, more smoke signal in pink.
Episcias are gesneriads, cousins to the African violet, native to the humid rainforest floor of Central and South America. In the wild they spread by stolons — runners, much like a strawberry plant — that root and form new rosettes as they go. Give your Pink Smoke time, warmth, and humidity, and one plant can spill into a whole colony trailing over the edge of its pot, with the occasional small, tubular orange-red bloom as a bonus.
Care snapshot
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Direct sun scorches the fuzzy leaves; too little light mutes the pink.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist — episcias don't love drying out completely, but they're just as unhappy sitting wet. Water with room-temperature water in a well-draining mix.
- Difficulty: Intermediate — it wants more consistency and humidity than your average pothos, but it's forgiving once you find its rhythm.
- Pet-safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
What you'll receive
Plants are living things, so the Pink Smoke you receive will have its own character and may vary slightly from the photo — that's part of the charm.
Smoky, silvery-pink, and quietly show stopping, Pink Smoke is a gesneriad for anyone ready to level up from the basics. Give one a home and watch the colony grow.
