Small plant, serious presence. The Labisia sp. 'Riau' plant is a compact rainforest understory gem from Riau, Sumatra, with deep green or red, textured leaves and striking pale veining that looks almost hand-drawn. It's a quiet showstopper for terrariums, vivariums, and anyone who loves a plant you have to lean in to appreciate.
Labisia lives low on the forest floor in Southeast Asia, where the light is soft and the air stays humid. That's the secret to keeping it happy at home: recreate a little slice of that shady, steamy world. It grows slowly and stays small, which makes it a natural fit for a closed terrarium or the foreground of a bioactive setup.
Care snapshot
- Light: Low to medium indirect light. Direct sun will scorch those leaves, so think "forest floor," not windowsill.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Use a light, airy mix and don't let it dry out completely.
- Difficulty: Intermediate. Easy-going in a terrarium; in open air it needs consistently high humidity to thrive.
- Pet-safety: Not known to be toxic to cats or dogs, but as with any plant, best kept out of nibbling range.
What you'll receive
Plants are living things, so your Labisia will have its own character and may vary slightly from the photo. Leaf size, veining, and colour shift a little from plant to plant, and that's part of the charm.
Rare, compact, and endlessly interesting up close, Labisia sp. 'Riau' is the kind of plant collectors hunt for and terrarium builders build around. Give one a home in your little living world and watch it flourish.
