Some plants you wait years to find. Variegated Monstera standleyana aurea is one of them — a rare, collector-grade form of Monstera standleyana whose long, glossy leaves come brushed and splashed in buttery gold and cream. No two leaves repeat.
Native to the rainforests of Central America, standleyana is a climber by nature, sending out slim, elegant leaves along a vining stem — often sold under the nickname "Philodendron Cobra," though it's a true Monstera. The aurea variegation is sectoral, meaning it appears in irregular streaks and half-moons rather than even speckling, so every new leaf is a small reveal. Give it something to climb and the leaves grow longer and broader over time.
Care snapshot
- Light: Bright, indirect light. The variegated sections carry no chlorophyll, so good light keeps the green portions working hard enough for the whole plant — but skip harsh direct sun, which scorches the pale tissue.
- Water: When the top inch or two of soil dries out. A chunky, well-draining aroid mix keeps the roots happy between drinks.
- Difficulty: Intermediate — standleyana itself is forgiving, but variegated plants grow slower and want steadier light.
- Pet-safety: Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed — like other aroids, it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Best kept out of reach.
What you'll receive
Plants are living things, and variegation is unique to every specimen — the plant you receive will have its own pattern and may vary from the photo. That's the whole appeal of a variegated plant.
Rare, patient, and genuinely striking — this is a shelf centrepiece and a collection milestone in one. We grow ours with care in Edmonton and only list plants we'd happily keep. Give one a home and watch it thrive.
