The Ponytail Palm's best care secret: forget to water it. That swollen, sculptural base isn't just a conversation piece — it's a purpose-built water reservoir, evolved over millennia in the semi-arid scrublands of eastern Mexico. Beaucarnea recurvata isn't actually a palm at all; it's a member of the asparagus family, and one of the most long-lived houseplants you can own.
They often come as multi-trunk specimen - usually meaning there are multiple plants in each pot. The growing tip can branch into two or more cascading rosettes of long, arching strap leaves rising from one sculptural base. Slow to grow and stunning to watch, it's the kind of plant that quietly becomes an heirloom. Give it decades and it just gets better.
Care snapshot
- Light: Loves bright, direct sun — a south or west window is ideal. Handles bright indirect light well too.
- Water: Every 2–4 weeks in summer, even less in winter. Water deeply, then leave it completely alone. The base does the storing.
- Difficulty: Beginner — genuinely one of the most forgiving plants we grow.
- Pet-safety: Non-toxic to cats and dogs.
What you'll receive
Plants are living things, so your Ponytail Palm will have its own character and may vary slightly from the photo — every multi-trunk specimen grows a little differently, and that's part of what makes it special.
Architectural, practically indestructible, and built to outlast every other plant in your home — the Ponytail Palm earns compliments on autopilot. Give it a sunny spot and come grow with us. 🌿
