Plant Detail Snapshot

Rarity
Rare

Solanum sp. "Ecuador" is one of those terrarium plants that hasn't earned a common name yet — this Solanum species is still botanically undescribed, which is exactly why terrarium collectors trade cuttings of it like currency. It comes out of Ecuador's humid forest understories, part of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) — the same family that gave us tomatoes, potatoes, and a few genuinely toxic cousins.

New growth opens a warm bronze with bright neon-green veining, then settles into deep green with lighter veins as each leaf matures. Every leaf carries a fine, soft fuzz — mist it and watch the water bead up like tiny jewels. Given humidity, it vines and climbs fast, turning into a genuine centerpiece for a bioactive build.

Care snapshot

  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light — in most setups that means positioned under a grow light inside the enclosure, not on a windowsill.
  • Water: Not a plant you water on a schedule. Keep the sphagnum or substrate consistently moist and humidity high; it needs an enclosed, humid environment to thrive and won't do well as an open-air houseplant.
  • Difficulty: Intermediate — vigorous and genuinely easy once established, but it needs a humid, enclosed terrarium or vivarium to thrive. Not a windowsill plant.
  • Pet-safety: Treat as toxic if ingested. Solanum is a nightshade genus with well-documented toxic compounds in many species; this specific undescribed species hasn't been individually tested, so we recommend keeping it out of reach of your pets that might nibble on it. Perfectly safe in most high humidity reptile and amphibian enclosures.

What you'll receive

You'll receive a rooted cutting established on sphagnum moss, ready to mount or plant into your terrarium or vivarium. Plants are living things, so yours will have its own character — leaf count, coloring, and vine length will vary slightly from the photo.

It's rare, it's a little bit of a flex, and once it's settled into the right humidity, it's genuinely easy to grow. If you're building — or leveling up — a bioactive setup, this is the plant that makes it feel like a living ecosystem. Give it a home in your next build.
