Slow and steady wins the shelf. The String of Turtles plant (Peperomia prostrata) is a tiny trailing gem whose round, coin-sized leaves are patterned like little turtle shells - deep green marbled with silvery veins - strung along delicate, cascading stems.
Native to the rainforests of Brazil, it's a compact, semi-succulent peperomia that stores water in its plump leaves. Growth is gentle rather than fast: over time the stems lengthen into soft trails that spill beautifully from a small hanging pot, shelf edge, or terrarium.
Care snapshot
- Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the shell patterning crisp; avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the small leaves.
- Water: Let the top of the soil dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly. Those thick leaves hold moisture, so it prefers a little too dry over too wet. A chunky, well-draining mix helps.
- Difficulty: Intermediate — easy-going once you learn its watering rhythm.
- Pet-safety: Considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though we still recommend keeping plants out of nibbling range.
