Tillandsia capitata "Peach"

No pot, no soil, no problem. Tillandsia capitata 'Peach' is an air plant that lives on light and water alone — a soft, silvery-green rosette that blushes warm apricot-peach as it matures.

Native to the tropical pockets of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, Tillandsia are epiphytes: in the wild they anchor to bark and rock and drink straight from the humid air through tiny scales on their leaves called trichomes (those are the fuzzy, silvery specks). 'Peach' is the cultivar prized for colour — as the plant approaches blooming size, the whole rosette warms from green to peach, then pushes a violet flower spike. Set it in a dish, a shell, a piece of driftwood, or nothing at all.

• Light: Bright, indirect light. The brighter the light (without direct afternoon sun), the stronger the peach blush.
• Water: Soak in room-temperature water for 20–30 minutes about once a week, then shake it off and set it upside down to dry within a few hours. Good airflow after a soak matters more than the soak itself.
